What do you think about the $100 laptop scheme?
Do you think it's a good idea to provide computers to the third world or should the money be spent on helping them in other ways? I'm in two minds about it: on the one hand I think it's great that they'll get to use the stuff and have some fun with it, but on the other hand, there's probably more important things we could send them and, if you look at the computers themselves, are they actually going to prove very useful, being that they're low spec with no real hard drive?
What do you think about the matter?
Fair points people, I guess if that's what they think will help then fair enough. On the plus side, hopefully the kids that get them will have some fun with them!
The laptops can be powered with pretty much any power source, even a crank or foot pedal. That's why they're designed without a proper hard drive and with a small screen. Take away hard drive, massive processor, fans and large LCD screen and you save a lot of power. They're waterproof too apparently.
I will be interesting to see how they will power them. It's not too long ago when Bailey invented a wind up radio so they could listen to the programmes otherwise there would be no way they could.
