Apple MacBook hard drive "refresh" or "clean up"?
I've had my MacBook (13" white) for what will be be three years in November 2009. I did purchase the extended AppleCare, but that only adds two years to the one year warranty that comes with the MacBook, so I won't be covered for replacements, etc., after November.
I'm wondering if anyone knows if Apple offers some sort of "refresh" program? Maybe making an appointment with a Genius at an Apple Store and taking the notebook in for a "check up"? This is my first Apple notebook - I know on a PC how to defragment the hard drive and basically "clean" things up, so I'm wondering if I can do the same thing for the MacBook to make sure it continues to run well. So far I haven't had any major issues with it, I just want to do whatever I can to ensure I can use it for another year or two before I have to get a replacement.
Thanks, all!
The equivalent to spending a weekend formatting and reinstalling Windows is spending two hours reinstalling Mac OS.
Do this:
1) Start Disc Utility (In the Utilities folder). And "Repair Permissions" for the boot drive.
2) Reboot the Mac. Hold the Shift key after the startup tone. Release it after you see the gray Apple logo. This will start it up in Safe Mode. Also, the Mac will rebuild the the hard drive directory. After you log in, restart the Mac again.
3) After the startup tone, hold Command, Option, P, R. Hold them until you heard the tone four more times. This will reset the Parameter Ram (PRAM).
4) Insert the System restore CD. Restart the Mac and hold the C key after the tone. This will make it boot from the CD. Run Disc Utility from the pull down menu and "repair disc" for the hard drive. Next, reinstall the OS - making 100% sure that you select the option to keep user setting - otherwise, you will lose all your data.
5) After OS install and reboot, run Software update to get the OS back up to date.
