I'm planning on buying a laptop in US for my brothers birthday but am worried about customs and/or shipping?
What is the cheapest way for me to purchase the laptop? I know Laptops are duty free but the whole 17.5% VAT rate is confusing. Is it best to bring it back in the box and pay the VAT, send via airmail as a gift (and how to I prove its a gift), or risk getting fined by having the opened product in my bag (I don't really wanna break the law anyway)
It would help if I knew where you lived because all countries have their own duties and procedures. I once bought a computer monitor in Malaysia and brought it back to Philippines where I live. I brought it back in the unopened box and declared it here in Philippines. I told the guy what it cost and showed him the invoice. Even though it is subject to duty I gave him a sob story and he didn't charge me anything.
