amilo li 1718 laptop does not recognise extra 1gb ram?
we removed 512mb of ram and installed a 1gb,
so it should've increased the ram memory to 1.5gb roughly, but for some reason the laptop still thinks its got 894mb...
any solutions?
Ouch - Notebook RAM cannot usually be added as an extra module replacement like you've done. All systems have specific RAM configuration requirements, and it's always best practice, if not system requirement, to install them in pairs - 2 512mb modules, 2 1gb modules, etc.
The specifications for your particular notebook are as follows:
Memory Configuration
2 SO-DIMM memory slots (no memory on board)
512MB DDR2 533/667MHz
1GB DDR2 533/667MHz
What this means is that you have 2 SO DIMM slots that can take either 2 512mb DDR2 modules (533 or 667mhz) or 2 1gb DDR2 modules (533 or 667mhz).
Unfortunately for you, it does not mean you can use a 1gb and a 512gb module together - modules must be installed in like pairs by size and frequency configuration. In order for it to work, you need another 1gb RAM module to pair up with the one you just got.
As I said, most RAM configurations today require even pairs to work properly, and it's more with notebooks because of the limited number of slots available to work with. Desktop motherboards typically have 4 DIMM slots, making it easier to have multiple configurations of RAM.
If you used an online RAM source like 4AllMemory.com to order your RAM from, their configuration checker should have told you that, and if not you can probably get a refund. If you just got the module by yourself.... As I said, bummer.
In the meantime, just put your old module back in, unless you got your RAM module locally and can get another one fast.
