First of all, you might need to consider if the operating system will support 500 GB. As I see the notebook has Windows XP Home Edition, and so it will support the 500 GB. Second, the hard drive you consider is a SATA drive and your notebook, indeed, supports SATA drives. I couldn't find in the product specification on the HP site what interface is the hard drive of your HP Dv5000, but in this link -ww.lapzone.com/servlet/...HP-PAVILION-dv5000/Detail- it says your Dv5000 is SATA interface. And as it says in the product description on Ebay, this is a notebook hard drive and SATA interface. So it will fit on your notebook. So I would say it is compatible. There's not too much deal on hard drives on issues of compatibility, the issues and problems come with RAM memory, but that's another story. However, I think $91 is not a good value for the money for 500GB hard drive. Although it is a hard drive for a notebook, I still don't see it as a good deal. Because if you haven't upgraded your notebook, I don't think that putting just 500GB of storage costs $91. You can consider buying the 500GB, but then your computer will be obsolete in not a long time from now and you'd have spent $91 for just 500GB of storage, but again, then you can reuse the 500GB hard drive in another laptop or notebook, or even desktop. But, as I say, it's not convenient in this case to put 500GB in a notebook, because storage is becoming cheaper and cheaper, and as I see it in a year or so you might be able to buy 1TB hard drive for $100. I would recommend to deal with the 40GB storage you got now or consider flash drives. And if you have a desktop or bigger computer, then don’t even think to buy the 500GB drive, better go for the terabytes for a desktop. But, it’s all your decision you know what you need and what you buy. That’s just my opinion. And yes your notebook does support this hard drive. Good lucks.
