Messenger bag? [Back pain / where could I buy one?]?
I read a little about messenger bags, and it seems quite a few people complain about the back pain associated with wearing one.
1. I have a habit of only using one strap on my backpack; would this be comparable to using a messenger bag, or would the messenger bag be significantly worse since it hangs from my side?
2. Where's a place that sells nice bags? I am considering this one, since I have a 14.1" laptop.

Do you guys have any feedback on this one? I was thinking I'd get either black or dark brown.
Any additional comments would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
1. The answer to your problem I think you already guessed. Your habit of using one strap on your backpack is the likely cause of any back pain, and it's certainly not good for your spine. The easiest solution might be to start using both straps (and for maximum ergonomics, start using the waist strap as well). If it's too difficult to get the backpack on and off, your straps are simply too loose, or perhaps the backpack is too small.
Messenger bags will only make your back worse, since they are designed to be used with (and typically only have) one strap. They are the hip fasion, but bad for your spine.
If you are having issues with carrying too much weight (10-20 lbs is a good maximum, depending on your body weight and frame), then even using two straps of a backpack might not help avoid the pain. And you might want to consider a wheeled backpack. Many of them are multi-use, so when you have lots of books, you can wheel it around, but for those days where it's light you can wear it like a backpack.
Eastpak and Jansport are two big brands with a lot of styles that sell both regular and wheeled backpacks.

2. The nicest messenger bags (im my opinion) are from TimBuk2 (http://www.timbuk2.com/) and they have a few designed to carry laptops as well as your other items. But again, if you are concerned about your back or experiencing pain already, you should avoid messenger bags.
A good general rule, messenger bag, backpack, field bag, or anything that your back has to support - stick to smaller bags and/or don't carry too much.
