Anyone know about culling red cherry shrimp?
I have a 15 gallon long red cherry shrimp tank. They have been breeding quite a bit and in less than a year there are so many in the tank now. The only shrimp I have witnessed with eggs have been the more redder coloured ones. The other day I noticed there were clearer or brownish shrimp with eggs. Are those the ones I am supposed to remove? And what do I do with them, feed them to other aquatic friends?
Cherry shrimp are one of the few species that does OK with a little overcrowding, but there's always a limit. Culling seems like an inhumane thing to do, but it's worse to overcrowd a tank and in the wild the weak wouldn't live anyway. Pick out any that are undesirable color, deformed or small, mostly to get them out of the gene pool. If you have another tank with predatory fish that would eat them, as long as the shrimp aren't diseased, it'd be a much appreciated treat for them to snack on some live food.
