How did the IBM 1620 computer get its number?
I wonder if it was named after the year that the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, because I thought it might have been about the same size and shape as that rock was. It was one of the earliest IBM computers that had transistors instead of vacuum tubes, and it was about the size of a large desk.
I'm also interested in knowing if there's some general formula for the way the numbers of IBM computers, such as the 650, the 701 and the 704 were assigned.
I think it's just as likely that they guy
who needed to come up with a number
looked at the clock and noticed it
was twenty past four in the afternoon.
The only number that I think was chosen
with any such "meaning" behind it was
System/360, where 360 was chosen because
it is the number of degrees in a full circle,
and the range of System/360 computers
was intended to cover everyone's needs,
from the smallest to the largest.
In some cases, numbers were based on predecessor
computers, such as 370 following 360,
and 7090 following 709 and 7094 following 7090.
Don't read too much into these things.
