What do I need to do to make my Macbook laptop wireless?
The only way my computer gets the ethernet is by connecting the yellow ethernet cable to my Macbook and if i disconnect it has no signal?? I want to make it wireless, i have ethernet in my house
All macbooks have wireless internet capabilities built-in. But you need to set it up for it to work. Wi-fi is basically a two-way radio between your computer and a device connected to the modem, called a router. Your macbook already has a Wi-Fi reciever built-in but you need to get the other radio for it to communicate with. The first step to getting Wireless set-up is to purchase a router. Any router will do- you don't need Apple's. When you come back with your router, plug your modem into the router using that ethernet cable. The next step is to set-up the router. If you're using an Apple router, run the AirPort Utilitiy (it's in your Utilities folder) and follow the instructions
Otherwise, go to network in System Preferences and make sure your Airport is turned on. Your next step is to connect to the router. You should find a new signal called "Linksys", "Belkin", "netgear", or "Default" depending on which brand of router you purchased. Click on it to connect. You could stop here, but that's not recommended.
If your router came with a set-up CD that works on Mac, run that now, otherwise, read the rest of this paragraph. Now that you're connected, look up the default IP address, username, and password for your router model. The IP address should look something like 192.168.1.1. Once you have those, type the IP address into the address bar of your web browser (for instance http://192.168.1.1 is a popular one). You'll be prompted for the user name and password. Enter those and you'll be brought to the router set up page. There are lots of options in lots of different tabs, but you should only touch two of them: the network name and the security options.
This part applies regardless of what router you're using. Change the network name to whatever you want- it's not a good idea to leave it on the default. Then, when you find the security settings, enable WPA or WPA2 (not WEP) encryption and set a password. When you save the settings, you'll probably be kicked off of the network. Try to connect again and it will ask you for a password. Enter the password you just set and you now have your very own secure wireless network.
