What is the best material to put under a laptop to keep it cool?
So yes, i have it on my desk (wood) and its soo hot to touch, is there something i can put it on that will somehow absorb the heat and dissipate it?
It depends what kind of laptop you have. Some laptops only have small vents and uses the laptop's design to dissipate heat. Some laptops are thicker because of internal fans and wider vents on the sides.
You can do a few things to cool it down. First is to go to BIOS and turn up the fan speed. This will definitely cool down your laptop a bit more but will make the fan's whirling sound a bit more loud. Second, NEVER put your laptop on any material that blocks the vents, such as pillows or blankets. This will only block airflow and heat up the laptop itself. Third, purchase a commercially available laptop fan that either connects to your USB or to a power source. Of course, this will add to the bulk and drain your laptop's battery faster than normal. Fourth, increase the natural airflow under your laptop.
My favorite of all is to use natural airflow. I simply use a long unsharpened pencil and put it under the laptop towards the back side to prop it up. This gives you a little airflow which prevents the system to overheat. Experiment with other materials as well. A used whiteboard marker, a hallow platic tube, etc.
Another favorite of mine is to put my laptop on top a marble surface (we have a small Lazy Susan made of marble). Marble is a wonderful material that absorbs and dissipate heat quickly and efficiently (I learnt this from when I was still back in high school).
Finally, if you are on the road a lot, don't prop your laptop on top of your bag. Use a shallow aluminum cookie baking pan. I actually saw someone doing this on the train in one of my commutes to and from work and chatted with the person. From that point on, I have adapted the same technique. Find a cookie pan that is roughly the same size as your laptop (also acts as an extra and sturdy LCD lid protector). When you are ready to use it, just flip it upside down with the flat surface touching the bottom of your laptop. The gap between your laps will make for a natural air flow and cool down the laptop; or at least your lap won't feel too hot.
