how to format a laptop with external cd drive ?

I am using sony vaio pcg r505 laptop which had a docking station (a base in which the cd rom drive is attached) which is brocken. i can use external cd drive for burning audios cd other general use. I cam use that for installing windows from my computer,but i can't use that for format from boot menu while restarting.. i want solution coz i wanna format my new hard disk..while i open boot option in bios setting then there is options 1) cd rom drive 2) +removable media(there is one option given"legacy floppy droves,3 )internal hdd 4) network boot..
I am using windows xp and i wanna uso another hard disk to install ubuntu..
