Why does my carrier bearing keep locking up?
I have a '93 GMC sierra 1500 ext cab. it has a split drive shaft and the carrier
bearings have locked up 3 or 4 times in the past two years. The bearings lock up
causing the bearing case to twist around in the rubber stableizer. the rubber soon
melts away leaving the shaft to spin violently in the metal bracket.
the mechanics fix it but can't explain why. i have noticed a small dent, about
1 inch round by 1/8 inch deep about 6 inches up from the rear U joint. could
this throw the shaft off balance enough to destroy the bearings?
Any thoughts?

This bearing can be installed backwards. The drive shaft is two piece and is splined together with a seal ring. The two shafts have to slide one inside the other, check for binding. Check each shaft to make sure it is stright.
