why isn't my hp laptop charging?

and my charger for it blew out about 3 months ago and we haven't bought one since. I just bought one last week and it came in and i put it in to the laptop and the light doesn't light up that it's charging. Is the laptop dead? or does it take time for it to actually start charging because it hasnt been charged in about 3 months and its been turned off.
HP ones have the light indicating that the battery is currently charging and not full. If it is not working, I think you should use your warranty. Your best choice is to go buy a new HP Charger.
If it is not new, I think replace the battery.
