How do i format my laptop ( HP DV7-1106TX ) so i can sell it?
I've sold my laptop and want to clear the laptop of any and all details/programs for the buyer. How would i go about doing this? I understand the laptop has inbuilt recovery data in it's HDD or something? Not quite sure how i go about doing this. It's a DV7 series laptop 32bit Vista.
Will DBAN leave it in a state ready for the next owner to use it?
Actually, both answers have merit.
Use DBAN to wipe only the operating system partition. Then you can still use the HP recovery partition to install a brand new copy of the OS.
If you do not wipe the OS partition first, remnants of your old files will be left on it after the OS install or "restore." "Formatting" the partition merely sets up a new file system; at most it *reads* every sector to check for errors; it does not overwrite all contents - so parts of the partition not actually written to by the recovery process will still contain some of your old stuff. There will be no directory entries pointing to it, so it will not be visible in e.g. Explorer - but it will be recoverable by someone with enough intent.
When you do use DBAN, do not bother with the "DoD Secure Erase" or any of that. A single overwrite with random data is completely sufficient. The Gutmann paper that claims to show that old data can be recovered from overwritten sectors has been well and thoroughly debunked; Gutmann himself never demonstrated any actual data recovery, he only was able to show weak correlations between old data and new waveforms - but you can only show those if you already know what the old data was in the first place! Which makes the whole thing rather moot.
In fact no hard drive recovery firm claims to be able to recover data after a single overwrite with zeroes, let alone random data.
