A fly flying inside a standing train. When the train moves the fly does not hit any of the carriage sides why?
The fly is flying about when the train accelerates. The rear of the carriage does not hit the fly then carry it along in momentum. At 100mph the fly just flies around normally not touching the carriage. Why?. Had the fly been resting on your shoulder then it would move with you. But suspended in the carriage it just goes along with you anyway.
As the train accelerates there will be two effects acting on the fly:
1) Inertia, the fly will continue at its current velocity causing the back of the train to catch up, in a vacuum the fly would end up at the back of the train.
2) Air resistance The air in the train will carry the fly along with it. This in practice will override the inertai effect
