compared to a 4200rpm ide laptop hard drive, how much faster is the 5400?

The 7200's run VERY hot. You might want to consider a laptop cooler also if you are putting one of these in. Esp if your laptop never was designed for it.
If you are looking to play your games faster or do something faster on it I'd recommend getting a eSATA pcmcia card and then building myself and external hard drive.
