IP address, safety precautions?
Hello, I was recently in Yahoo! Pool and someone in the pool room told me they had found my computer's IP address, now I understand they may just be saying this to frighten me but just in case I want to make sure that everything that could keep my computer safe is working, my cousin a few minutes ago helped me to turn my firewall on, but is there anything else I can do to protect the computer more, incase it helps I am on a laptop.

What you can do with an IP address...
You can resolve it and get a basic idea of where you live.
You can port scan it looking for open doors.
You can knock that IP right off the internet by consuming its bandwidth.
You can figure out who their ISP is, then file a spam complaint.
All I could think of really quick, theres more out there.
It is possible in some multi player online games to obtain someones IP address and its quite easy to do. From a command prompt type in "netstat". It will return all IP addresses that have connections with your computer.
Ways to protect yourself:
Make sure you have all windows updates.
Make sure other programs you use are also up to date.
Get a hardware/software firewall.
A router.
Turn your modem off or put it in standby when computer is not being used.
Virus scanner, spyware scans.
Remove any info from "web" about you. This info can be used to guess your password to various sites. You don't need much info to reset a password. For a certain email provider, the only info you need is zip code, date of birth and answer to secret question. A question like "what city are you from" will give them the zip code. Date of birth can be as easy as asking you when your birthday is and guessing how old you are to figure out the year of birth date. Secret question is usually easy to lift from thought out questions. Say the secret question is something like, My favorite car. Start a conversation on different cars and eventually slip in the question "so whats your favorite car". Once your email account has been stolen, so has every other account you have linked to it.
Unless the person is a superhacker, this should protect you.
You should have asked him what your IP address was so you knew if he was pulling your leg or not.
