are laptops more fragile nowadays?
My hp laptop purchased back in 2004 fr $1000 bucks is pretty sturdy. It had endured rough lugging during the first year, subzero temperatures, rough wiping of the LCD screen, water being spilt on the keyboard (not much though), heavy textbooks stacked on top of it, and ate many bowls of ramen on top of its grey cover. There is that loose jack problem- but it didn't hit until 3 years later.
Maybe I was lucky. And I didn't used to go online as much, so maybe I didn't realize... but it seems like any computer i look up nowadays has a defect. hinges breaking, lcds cracking, a loose jack after the first few months, etc.
What are your opinions about this? are laptops more fragile and less sturdily built nowadays? Am i just paranoid now or acting like an old person reminiscing about the good old days?
Yes, I think they're flimsier. I sell the modern ones and service them from any era the customer deems worth fixing.
I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. A decade ago, a computer was an investment. There might be one in the family, and you expected your $2k to last you a few years! The pre-2000 machines I see are built like tanks: rather heavy and with a fair amount of metal shielding. They certainly don't have broken hinges!
Now, it's understood that your model is obsolete roughly yesterday. Processing speed doubles every time we blink, and they're so cheap that it's often less expensive to get a newer, faster one than to service the old. I try to tell people they'll have a better computer in six years if they buy a $400 laptop now and a $400 laptop in three years than if they spend $800 on a computer now and expect it to last, and they think I'm lying to them. (Why? Why would a sales person lie to you to get you to spend less money?) But the $800 computer has nicer features, not necessarily a longer lifespan.
Now, for a grand, you can still get a computer that will last. They're called "rugged" computers, and are designed for military, contractors, police, and anyone else who needs a computer that can handle a few dings. They're built like the old computers, only more so: very heavy, lots of metal, some rubber thrown in for good measure. You can still get a lasting machine for what you paid in '04, but it will feel rather expensive when you realize you can purchase 2.5 disposable computers for the same price.
I think the landfills are the victims here, not the consumer.
