What's the best laptop bag for protecting my back - for a 17.3" screen?
I work in lots of different locations so I carry my laptop, papers and everything around with me everywhere, my laptop bag gets pretty heavy and I don't want to damage my back (I'm prone to a bad back after an accident a few years ago). What do you think the best option is for me? I don't want a wheely bag as I also have to drop my child off at nursery on my way to work and it would be problematic to push a buggy and pull a wheely bag around at the same time. I'm currently using a tatty old laptop backpack which I need to improve on as it gets pretty uncomfy on the walk to work (couple of miles). Any advice will be much appreciated.
You really shouldn't be bringing a 17" laptop around with you everyday, especially if you have back problems. If you can afford it, try to get a netbook or a smaller laptop which you can use as a mobile alternative for your 17". You can buy one used or refurbished even.
I recommend getting a bag from one of these brands: Jansport, QuickSilver and Swiss Gear. I have a Swiss Gear backpack with a laptop compartment and although I've had it for years, it still looks like new. Their website catalogue seems to be down, but it might work for you: http://www.swissgear.eu/ecProducts.asp and http://www.swissarmy.com/travelgear/Pages/SubCategory.aspx?category=backpacksmessengerslaptopready&
QuickSilver also has some laptop bags, but I've never tried them myself. My cousin swears by the brand though, so here: http://www.quiksilver.com/family/index.jsp?cp=2981771.2981775&categoryId=3300306&f=PAD/Technology/Laptop+Sleeve&fbc=1&fbn=Technology|Laptop+Sleeve
And last but not least, Jansport bags. I've had about half a dozen Jansport bags throughout my childhood and I've got to say that the quality is outstanding. All of them are still perfectly usable today despite the abuse I put them through. I haven't tried one of their laptop backpacks though: http://www.jansport.com/js_product_thumb.php?cid=41
