Thermal grease question...?
I'm putting back together an old Dell Dimension 2400 b/c my laptop is running out of CPU to run my music production software. I live in the middle of nowhere, about 45 minutes from the nearest Wal-Mart or anything. I was wondering if Blue RTV silicone can be used as thermal grease for my heat sink. It's a gasket silicone for automobiles and can with stand high temperatures. I could wait a few days to buy some thermal grease when I go back to town, but I'm working on finishing a song and it's impossible to mix and master with the stuttering sound I get from too much CPU usage. I'm in the process of building a custom computer for my work, but it'll be a while before I'm finished receiving the parts.
I wouldn't mess around with something like Thermal Compound.
If you need thermal paste, use Thermal Paste and nothing else.
If you use something else (not tested) you could possibly permanently damage your CPU and Heatsink (double Whammy!)
Better safe than sorry.
