How do I turn scroll lock on?
I have looked this up already online, and it tells me to just press the scroll lock key, but my laptop doesnt have a scroll lock key! (I have an hp laptop, less than a year old). The only thing close is the "scroll" key, but i have tried pressing it by itself, and in combination with shift, alt, and ctrl. If the scroll key is not scroll lock, then what is it? And how do turn scroll lock on???
It is probably under f12, if you even have it at all. Scroll lock is a button that makes it so that the up/down arrow keys will make the screen scroll up and down instead of making the cursor move (Same for the left/right arrow keys). It is regarded as an outdated function now that most mouses have scroll wheels or the equivalent built in, and most pages have the scroll bars on the sides and bottom of the screen. A lot of programs and even some operating systems don't even support that functionality anymore. Some computers don't have this key at all anymore either, so it probably shouldn't be affecting you. If you are having a problem related to the lack of this key existing, please expound upon the problem.
I came back and noticed that Justin (one of the others who is answering this question) wants to know what the num lock key does. It is for computers that have a number pad. Very few laptops have number pads, but I have seen some that do. The number pad is the area on the right side next to the standard keyboard that has the numbers 0-9 (and a few other keys) arranged in a square. When num lock is on, the numbers on the number pad type numbers. When num lock is off, the numbers on the number pad do other things:
1 = end
2 = down arrow
3 = page down
4 = left arrow
5 = clear
6 = right arrow
7 = home
8 = up arrow
9 = page up
*0 = insert
Also, the dot key on the number pad only types dots when the num lock is on. When the num lock is off, it turns into a delete button.
*The 0 is a comma on some keyboards.
