Do laptop cooling fans make a lot of noise?
I have a laptop that makes considerable noise from it's internal cooling fan. I'm looking into buying an external cooling fan, but would like to know-- do they make a lot of noise? Pretty much the reason I'm buying it is to cut down on the fan noise, but if my internal fan's noise is just going to be replaced by the noise of the external fan then I may look into something different.
Generally the bigger the fan, the less noise it makes. This is because fan noise gets a lot louder as the fan spins faster, and small fans have to spin very fast to provide decent air flow. Large fans, on the other hand, have larger blades that move more air, so they spin a lot slower while still moving the same (if not more) air, this means less noise. However, most fans that are big enough to run nearly silent while producing good airflow require 12V and USB ports can only provide 5V, so USB powered cooling pads are quieter than your laptop's built in fan but aren't the quietest fans out there. I got a USB cooling pad because my laptop overheats and it was quiet but got loud and I'm going to take it apart and re-oil the fans. Sometimes the fans inside the pad will vibrate against the pad frame causing noise, to help this I took mine apart and sandwiched the fans in tightly with some folded pieces of paper (foam would work better but I didn't have any).
