External hard drive enclosure for laptop.?
I have an HP laptop that won't turn on. I am sending in for repair but wanted to backup my files before sending in. First I got this http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/NexxTech-2-5-Hard-Drive-Enclosure-NHDE25/sem/rpsm/oid/150788/catOid/-12973/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do which i think didn't work because it was an ATA/IDE drive? Took that back and got this http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Antec-Aluminum-Hard-Drive-Case-MX-100/sem/rpsm/oid/193358/catOid/-12973/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do still doesn't fit... what exactly do i need to get? Help! I have tons of pics that I really don't want to lose and don't want to pay geek squad 100 bucks if I can get it done myself. TIA!!!
How do I tell if I need a SATA or an ATA/IDE?
assuming you have a SATA disk you need this enclosure
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817348022
Newegg is more reliable than Circuitcity if it comes to computer parts.
how to tell if you have ATA/IDE or SATA
go to the Device-Manager and expand "Hard Disk" or "Data Storage" or the like. enter the showed disk type/number in a search engine - it will tell you. (if your laptop is less than 2 years old, it's most likely a SATA disk).
ouch, stupid me ![]()
you can't go to the device manager if the laptop doesn't start up. remove the disk and check the connector at the back, if there is a 44pin connector it's an ATA/IDE disk, if it's a 7pin connector then it's SATA.
