what are the advantages of carry-on luggage?

i can see taking essentials like laptop, notebook, mag, book, etc. but why would i want to take shampoo on a plane trip that may only take a few hours? i can't imagine using it or any other toiletries during the trip.

A few of the advantages of carry-on luggage are that you are guaranteed that regardless of what happens with flight delays, lost baggage, baggage put on a different flight than you are which simply arrives a day late, etc... you will have the "essentials" with you at all times.

I've had bags show up 3 days after I did, a bag lost entirely, my bags loaded onto a flight I was bumped from (all airlines overbook and occasionally have too many people actually show up for a flight then have to rebook some people on later flights). You get the point.

Since passengers are allowed one carry-on bag and one "personal piece" such as a purse or laptop case; this is how I pack when taking my laptop with me. Perhaps you could use it as a guide:

I put documents, (Passport, airline tickets, wallet), lipgloss and a magazine in my laptop case. I keep this out under the seat in front of me since it has my essential items in it and I use my laptop during the flight.

I bring one carry-on piece (which I stow in the overhead compartment and leave there during the entire flight) with a change of clothes, pajamas, a change of underclothes, hair brush, make-up, jewelry medications, and of course, your camera and anything else valuable or any items you don't want the baggage guys going through Also, take whatever toiletries matter to you in small quantities (less than 3oz and packed in a quart sized see-through zip-lock bag).

You are right about shampoo, etc; but a toothbrush and paste isnt a bad idea to take in the way of toiletries. This way no matter what happens to your "real luggage", you'll have what you need to survive a day or so until you get it worked out. Generally speaking, things work out fine with baggage; but when it doesn't you really don't want to be stuck in a lurch, especially if you are traveling for something other than vacation.

Oh and if you want to make life easier for yourself and the security screeners, just pack everything that is small in your carry-on in zip-lock bags. It allows for easier screening. If they choose you randomly to search through your bags its so much simpler and quicker to do as well.
