laptop phenom x6
Which is better: the Phenom II x4 or the x6?

My parents decided it was time to get a new desktop and I promised them I could build a better desktop than Dell for half the price but I'm stuck between the Phenom II x4 (black edition 965, $160 on newegg.com) and the Phenom II x6 (1090T black edition, $280 on newegg.com). I realize one has six cores and one has four cores but do I really need SIX cores for $100 more? I want to future-proof this thing but I don't want to spend money on something I won't use. I have a laptop with a Core i7-820QM quad-core (HT makes it seem like 8) which I sometimes see use all four (eight if you count virtual threads or whatever) cores although not even close to 50% of each core. If I get the x4, will I still see better performance over my 820QM? And what about the x6; I'm planning on doing a bit of gaming with it but I'd rather pour money into the GPU than the CPU... Do I need six cores?

Get the x4. Most programs don't utilize all 4 cores, yet alone 6, so unless you are into some serious multitasking, the 965 x4 is plenty good. The future proof on the x4 is the unlocked multiplier, which allows for some serious overclocking. Lastly, most data in gaming is graphical data, so if you are gaming, it would be wiser to spend more in the GPU than the CPU.
