what is the point of it and what does it do
Increase air circulation to reduce heat (both for the laptop and your lap). They're also useful in adjusting the height of your laptop to allow a more comfortable view of the screen. If you set the laptop on a desk/table you end up looking down which is hard on your neck - get a laptop riser and perhaps a usb mouse and keyboard and you'll be more comfortable.
