Connect 5.1 Surround from 3.5mm port: Surround Sound Upgrade Kit vs Digital I/O Module?
This is my problem.
I have a Logitech Z-5500 surround. I also have a laptop with a 3.5mm audio port. And I want to have 5.1 surround sound.
I know that the best solution is to buy a Sound Blaster X-Fi expresscard. But my question is, which would be a better option:
a. the Surround Sound Upgrade Kit

Additionally, can i actually not buy the X-Fi soundcard, and just use the Digital I/O Module to connect to the 3.5mm audio port of my laptop? ( It seems that the module has a 3.5mm input)
Would that be the same as if I just connect my laptop to the 3.5mm port of Z5500? ( I am guessing that 3.5mm port do not transfer 5.1 sounds)

The I/O module is only for use in conjunction with an X-Fi or similar, so forget that as a direct solution.
The 3.5mm output you have on the laptop will almost definitely only be L+R audio, so you're right in guessing that won't create 5.1.
X-Fi should do the job, and well. A 5.1 sound card (internal or external) will have a minimum of three outputs: front (L+R audio), rear (same), and centre/sub combined in the third plug/socket. The 5500 has the benefit of a digital coaxial input too, and the X-Fi digital output (though 1/8" minijack rather than 1/4", so you need to get the right cabling). So, getting this would be your best bet.
There are plenty of alternative products (couple of links added), but I tend to stick with the good names.
Hoep this helps. Once you have it up & running properly, you'll love that 5500 system.
