Life of laptop vs. desktop?
I bought an acer laptop about 9 months and it is great. I live on the very edge of verizon wireless service and it works very well. I have some delays while streaming but I can live with that. Quite a few people have told me that my laptop will not last near as long as a desk top. This my first computer and I love it. Does anyone out there know, just by average use, if it is true that generally speaking that my laptop will break down before a desk top? I know this is sort of stupid question but bare with me, as I am still learning but, should say curious, instead of worrying about this, Does anyone out there have enough experience w/computers to shine some light on my situration. Sincerely, Eddie
As a general standard most computers will last about 3 years before their hardware is considered old. Since it's a laptop the constant handling of the machine and moving it around does mean that it will take a lot more wear and tear than a standard desktop computer. Although this does not alone mean that it won't last. Assuming you take good care of your laptop there's no reason why it won't last a good while. Unfortunately though, I would expect a desktop computer to last somewhat longer than a laptop mainly for these reasons:
1) Again the wear and tear a laptop recieves means it will most probably get damaged sooner than a desktop computer.
2) In the event one of the computers components breaks down or needs upgrading desktop computers are much easier to upgrade and repair. It is also cheaper to get this work done on a desktop computer.
3) Since laptops can't be fixed as easy as desktop computers some computer repair shops are unable to repair all laptop problems. This means your laptop is sometimes required to be sent to the manufacturer for repair. This can end up expensive and sometimes not worth the trouble.
Although regardless of the life expectancy it really falls down to what you require the computer for. If you want a business computer or just a computer you can move around, take home, take to the office, etc. then a laptop is probably best. If you only intend to use the computer at home and don't plan on moving it round often, then a desktop computer is probably better suited for your needs.
