What is an inexpensive PC laptop?
I am looking for an inexpensive PC laptop for doing research in Ecuador for the next year or two. I have a Mac now which I love, but the institution I am researching with has informed me that many places in Ecuador are not equipped for Macs.
I need it only for basic internet use, word processing, and to archive photos of my time there. Something very basic will do.
I also need it to have a good battery life. When I'm out in the field, I will often go a long time without access to electricity.
I'd also like it to be fairly lightweight, and not too bulky. I'll have my entire life in a backpack, and the computer must not weigh me down. 
I've looked at Acer Aspire One, but they look so much like toys.... Are there any other options?

Congrats on your research gig in Equador! As I understand what your needs are, its obvious that a laptop will not be what you need.
You will love having an affordable, lightweight ultra-portable netbook with you. Netbooks (the new trend in portable computing) are great for travel, and will do everything you need them to do.
I am a mac user myself, but I also have a netbook. Contrary to what others have said here, there are netbooks with 120 gig hard drives, which will hold mountains of photos and vids. You can also upload files to the clouds and store photos online.
For you, I recommend the ASUS Eee PC 904HA 8.9-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) in Fine Ebony. The six-cell battery will really last. It's an excellent netbook, and will get lots of attention from curious admirers.
