Motherboard Base Parts
Trying to build gaming computer thats cheap. what parts should i get?

Mostly just surf the web alot and play videos like Leage of Legends and occasionally Download MMORPG games to try them out.
I have old computers at home and will take parts out of them so it can be cheaper. I have a DVD drive, Hard Drive, PSU, not sure of RAM.
Any thing else i need?
maybe a case but not sure.

Proccessors I am looking at but open to others because i just base it kinda on the Ghz but i know theres more to it.
Phenom II X4 Quad-Core Processor 955 Black Edition Boxed $140
Phenom II X2 560 Black Edition Boxed Processor $100
im Open for more just saw those and though they were good since there atleast 3.0 ghz.

I dont know what motherboard to get for them though. would like one thats good for less then $100.
Also a decent video card. Would like for this gaming comp. to be less then $400.

First and foremost, if your current drives (hard disk & DVD) aren't SATA then you will need to upgrade them as most modern motherboards have only one IDE port to connect older devices.

Now, for the most important part, the motherboard. You can get a very decent AM3 motherboard based on one of AMDs older chipset (770, 785, 790 etc) and there are many great boards using the 785G chipset from Asus such as an M4A785TD-V ATX board (or the M4A785TD-M micro-ATX version) at around £75 ($120) or less if you find the right place. Gigabyte also makes great equivalent motherboards but I haven't had the pleasure of using one yet so won't comment on them.

At your allowed budget of around £60 ($100), the Asus M4A785D-M Pro micro-ATX motherboard has a nigh on unbeatable value to performance ratio (full review in link below).

Personally, I would suggest you steer clear of the micro-ATX boards as the lack of space for expansion slots can/will hurt when you finally need it (bitter experience taught me that). I would also highly recommend that you spend £20 more (£80 or $130) to get a great full ATX motherboard with AMD's latest chipset (the 800s like 880G) such as the Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 which gives you the next gen USB 3.0 and SATA III so that you can future proof your PC to a greater extent. By buying this quality motherboard, you can easily have it last for years simply changing or upgrading the components around it.

Most (if not all) the motherboards mentioned above have the core unlocking feature that can mean you unlock extra cores in a cheaper Phenom II dual core in a matter of a few keystrokes. So you can save a bit of money buying the dual core Phenom II and unlocking it (I did the same thing a couple of months ago and I got a full fat quad for the price of a dual core. It's actually not bad as dual core either.

Since it's a very good price, I would go for the quad 955. Or you can take a gamble and buy yourself a dual core 555 or 560 and hope you can unlock the dormant cores to make it a triple or quad core CPU as eluded to above.

With the PSU, again I don't know what it's rated for and what connectors it may have but it must be a decent branded model, not a no-name, generic one as to make sure the rest of your components are safe. If you do need a PSU, I would say that you should have a nice 500W branded model as the minimum with PSUs of a 650W being the most ideal. Here, I would recommend a Silverpower 650W PSU for £60 ($100 - link below) as I own one myself and it's brilliant for the price.

You can always spend a bit more, say £85 ($140) to have a more efficient PSU with modular cables meaning you can simply remove the cables you are not using to reduce clutter in your case. Obviously, doing this means that it won't really be a low-budget gaming PC anymore but it's still an option if you do feel flush.

Speaking of cases, there are many good cases in the £50-80 range ($80-130) but you would go wrong with the £50 or less Antec Three Hundred.

Finally, in terms of video cards, yet again for value, there's no beating the previous generation. And AMD/ATI Radeon 4850 graphics card, at less than £70 ($110), is a sufficiently potent card for those on a tight budget. But as it's a discontinued model, it's more likely that you won't be able to get it from a retailer meaning you have to dive into the online market place that is eBay and find a decent example. Still, if it's not possible to get it, you can go for a 4770 or 4830 which deliver about 20% less performance but are still suitable for the type of gaming you are interested in. You can even go for a 4650 or 4670 if your budget is really pushed. Again, I am demonstrating an ATI "bias" because I haven't had any experience with nVidia cards.

Well, that's my penny's worth and I hope it may help you in some way so good luck on your build...

P.S. In regards, to RAM, if you do pick one of the boards above, you will have to have DDR3 modules. But currently, these are retailing at around £30 ($50) for 2GB or £60 $100) for 4GB and maybe less in the US so it should hopefully not be too expensive.

P.P.S. All the conversions are very rough approximations so may be slightly more or less.
