Netbooks and the Acer Aspire One?
Hi
I have decided to look into buying a Netbook computer and have found the Acer Aspire One to tick all the boxes as to what I'm looking for in a mobile computer.
I was looking for the 1gb ram, 160 gb Hard disk version with Windows installed, not Linux... the cheapest I have found this for is £250.
I have read excellent reviews about the computer and just wondered if anybody knows what changes if any are coming to the netbook market. I just read that Acer are bringing out another (or more) Aspire Netbook, see this link dated March 20th.
If there are new ones coming, will that £250 one I was looking at be very cheaper soon? Should I wait? Money is tight, I don't want to pay £250 for something that's gonna be much cheaper real soon.
Anybody got advice on Netbooks and whether this Aspire One is worth just getting now? Are there more netbooks imminently due that I should consider instead? Thanks.
With Windows? Which version? XP will be ok - it needs only 512Mb of RAM to run. Vista needs a minimum of 2Gb to work efficiently so if you're planning to use it check if the net-book can accept a memory upgrade. A lot of them have only one slot for RAM and can't accept any more. Linux would be better but if you don't want it XP does the job.
If you do purchase it, turn off startup programs that you don't need running you could ditch some of your software and install less memory consuming, more efficient stuff.
Here's some examples:
Get rid of Adobe Reader and use Foxit instead. It works just as well and takes up a fraction of the memory.

Same goes for Windows Media Player. VLC is much better for laptops or netbooks and plays pretty much any type of media files.

Get rid of Microsoft Office and use Open Office instead.

Use Prio to prioritise your running processes and check what's running and whether it's to be trusted.

Remove Internet Explorer and use something faster such as Google Chrome but if it's not to your liking then Opera is a good one to go for.

There's even a version which runs from a USB key so you don't even need to keep a browser installed on your machine.

Finally remove any software that you don't use. Windows Messenger and Outlook Express might be examples.
Finally consider the Advent 4123. It has full wireless and Wi-Fi capability and has a built in modem for mobile broadband which accepts a SIM card. It has a similar spec but comes in at £230.
