Your HP will only use one kind of ram. For example if you have DDR2, then you have to buy the same type DDR2 Ram for it to work on your computer.

If you are still unsure, bring your notebook to the computer store and they will be able to tell you what type of Ram to purchase. 1 GB of ram is plenty for just surfing the net, you will notice a difference with upgrading if you are a gamer. Extra Ram allows running multiple programs at the same time without the computer freezing on you.
