My friend seems keen to buy a new 'notebook' PC. What are the main disadvantages of a notebook PC?
These small 'notebook' type laptops sure look cute and seem quite price competitive.
What are the important characteristics and differences of 'notebook' and 'desktop' pc's that she ought to be aware of?

Firstly, for every dollar you spend on a laptop you would only have to spend 50 cents to get similar performance. Meaning laptops are around twice as exspensive. Even when you purchase similar performing parts in a laptop, they are extremely limited on several levels, the biggest level is cooling. They get hot in that tiny case, usually shortening their lives tremendously.
My favorite idea to point out is how easily and often they get stolen. My desktop is large, heavy and it wouldn't be sneaky in any way to try and steal it.
I got my desktop recently from http://www.myspace.com/nanafriendpcs . They have the best prices, best service and they put a smile on my face, send your friend to them and tell him to forget the laptop idea, it's pretty much garbage.
