Can it even use 16 GB of DDR3 RAM?
Im trying to build my ultimate notebook (I'm a computer science major, so more development oriented than gaming) and the Lenovo Thinkpad W510 with the Intel Core i7-920XM Processor Extreme Edition, 256 GB SSD, and 16 GB of DDR3 RAM is looking nice. However, I'm concerned that the processor can only utilize 8GB of RAM, as is indicated on Intel's website. My question is, would it even make sense to get more than 8 GB of RAM. Sorry if this is a kind of novice question, I'm rather new to the hardware game
1) No it does NOT make sense to get more than 8gb of memory for your laptop. Are you running 3-4 virtual environments concurrently on it for your major? IE using Virtualbox to virtualize Windows 2008 R2 and other operating systems to run at the same time all with massive amounts of memory? If the answer is no which I imagine it is, don't bother, 8gb is plenty, you have 4 slots that each support a ddr3-4gb module, 8gb is plenty for your needs!
