Hello! When not using at night, is it better to leave a notebook pc in hibernation or stand-by?
I don't want to leave it on at night (nor plugged in) when I'm not using it. It's a Toshiba laptop. For reference, I have many things plugged into it (all USB....external hard drive, wireless keyboard/mouse, USB hub, printer...etc). Currently, I'm putting it into hibernation; it boots up and takes a few minutes. Stand-by boots up much faster. I'm just wondering, which is your preference and why? Which is better? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Hibernate saves all your settings and volatile memory into the hard drive and your notebooks shuts down and turns itself off.
In standby mode, the notebook simply shuts down non essentials like the LCD monitor, hard drive and other devices the computer is still turned on but using absolute minimum amount of power.
If the computer is plugged into the mains and its important for me to access my computer asap, I use standby. But if I am travelling and need access to my computer fast, I use hibernate. This method saves your battery and extends its service life.
