How do I get my shy bunny to play more?
I just got a new rabbit. He is a black rex named Obsidian, but he's really shy. He won't let me see him eat or drink. When i pet him he hides his head under my arm. How do i get him to be less shy?
Some rabbits really take a while to warm up to you. It took my rabbit about a year to really develop personality-wise into the beloved pet I know today.
I would start out by spending time with your rabbit the way he'd want to spend time. Place your rabbit on the floor, and lie down. Don't move, even if your rabbit comes to investigate. Rabbits are prey animals, so being held makes them quite uncomfortable. They much prefer to have all four feet on the ground and to be in control of how much human-interaction they feel safe with. Rabbits are very curious creatures and eventually won't be able to resist coming to check out the human lying on the floor. It might take some time, but they will come. Eventually, as your rabbit gets braver, you can pet them, sit up, etc etc.
Also, please remember that a relationship with a rabbit is totally trust-based. Dogs need an "alpha" and do very well with appropriate punishment, but punishing a rabbit will backfire. Ignore unwanted behaviour or shriek loudly to let the rabbit know "no"; praise good behaviour every time to encourage it. If your rabbit's trust that you (a predator) are not a threat to them is broken just once, the relationship with your pet will suffer.
