Bought a used comp.?
it has 1.8 Ghz, 256 ram, 40 GHD, w/ CDRW-DVD also came w/ Office 2003, and XP pro. Is this going to be ok for homework, e-mail, games/movies/music?
Should be fine, except Windows XP needs at least 512MB of RAM to run properly with all it's features turned on.
I suggest giving it a checkover @ http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/
And downloading Mozilla Firefox + Thunderbird (or the 2 combined as "SeaMonkey") to use as your default browser & e-mail, as they run faster + more reliable than Internet Explorer + Outlook Express.

Also make sure you've battened to down the hatches with regards to security........ either "ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite" (as a paid for option) or these 3 combined:
Avira Anti-VIR PersonalEdition Classic

My old computer at:
1.1GHz AMD Duron Processor, 128MB RAM (later upgraded to 320MB with the addition of an extra 256MB stick of RAM... shared this with the graphics. so was 384MB RAM in total), 30GB Hard drive, Windows '98SE.
Got by perfectly fine with Internet / E-Mail / Word processing / spreadsheets, etc.......... and most games made prior to about 2001, but struggled with newer ones like "TOCA RACE DRIVER"
It's replacement I use now after the old one self-destructed in December has these specs:
3.33GHz Intel Celeron D processor, 1024MB RAM, 256MB Graphics Card, 80GB Hard drive + XP Home SP2.
This also works great for Internet + E-mail (had it running 5days straight without a glitch up until lastnight when i had to go out somewhere) + office applications (except for a glitch where i had to reinstall the OS and my Lotus Smartsuite software wouldn't reinstall).......... and it isn't bad for some games (e.g. the "TOCA RACE DRIVER" game works great on it)........... but I'm also finding alot of old favourites refuse to work with it (e.g. "TOCA Touring Car", "SimGolf" + a few others).
