Where can I find parts to fix a window A/C unit?
My A/C unit in the window of my apartment stopped working. It turns on, but the fan doesn't move. I looked at some other answers and think it may be the capacitor. However, I don't know where I can buy one and what information I need to make sure I get the right one. I live near Salem, OR and I'm willing to drive to Portland if I need to. Please help.
The capacitor can be purchased an expensive way or a cheap way. The costliest way is to look up the part listed in the breakdown and demand the exact replacement part, This works well. You could save a ton by looking at the capacitor's rating. The window unit will contain a dual capacitor. It will have 3 posts.
One for common, 1 for fan, and 1 for herm (hermetically sealed compressor).
A typical window ac for one room will have a 5/20mfd@370vac capacitor. A 12k btu window unit will have a 7.5/35mfd@370 vac which means the fan runs on 7.5 mfd's and the compressor runs on 35 mfd's. The 370 vac is for a common unit while a 440 vac is a heavy duty capacitor. If you cannot find say a 5/25@370vac capacitor then a 5/25@440vac will work as good and better even. My point is this: looking on the capacitor and getting the value of it greatly reduces the price of it.
