Do you still have to go to the Police Academy to be a part time, reserve or volunteer officer?
Curious have a full time job and cant afford to the academy without working.
It depends on what state you're from. In Florida, you have to pay your own way through the academy and then you get to job hunt afterwards. You're right it doesn't make sense. In Kentucky, I was hired like any other job, and they payed me while I was going through the academy. Unlike Florida you can't go into the academy without a police department that will hire you. Furthermore, in Kentucky we have "special deputies" who work for the Sheriffs Office and don't require any schooling. But that limits them on the charges they can put on someone. For example, the special deputies I know can't charge DUI because they haven't been trained for it. But they get to do the majority of the fun stuff too. I'm sure every state has a position that doesn't require the academy. There are elected positions that don't require the academy also, for example constable, etc.
