I am going to upgrade my computer to 64-bit Windows 7 Professional.?
Currently I have 3 GB RAM installed in my laptop (max for 32-bit windows 7), and am planning to upgrade to 64-bit Windows 7 Professional, I want to upgrade to 8 GB RAM and am wondering if I can. I have a Gateway P-6831 FX Series, and the support page is:
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2008/GodzillaFX/1015088R/1015088Rcl9.shtml
I was wondering if I would be able to stray from what is listed for this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ValueRAM+-+4GB+PC2-6400+DDR2+SoDIMM+Laptop+Memory/9663604.p?id=1218142675886&skuId=9663604
I will be upgrading so I would like to get two of these, if I am able to. Or if I should just take my computer to an "expert", and let them decide. Thank You.
The maximum supported ram for this chipset appears to be 4 gigabytes at DDR2-667 (2x2gb).
Therefore, it is:
1) useless to install DDR2-800 ram as it will only run at DDR2-667.
2) also, you could DAMAGE the computer by placing higher capacity ram (over 2gb sticks) into the slots!
You appear to be aware that the laptop only has two SO-DIMM slots.
Also, you will likely not see much of a performance gain from installing over 4 gigabytes of memory - it is pretty damn hard to use that much ram.
