Damage to electronics?
Can accidentally bumping, hitting, or slamming an electronic (such as a laptop, an mp3 players, a cell phone, a handheld gaming system, a portable HDD or DVD writer, etc.) cause it to malfunction or even break?
I don't mean anything hard (like dropping it on the floor), just accidentally hitting it against something or with your hand. Are most consumer electronics "built" to withstand and protect itself against such shocks or force?
For instance, could accidentally bumping an external DVD burner against the table cause it to malfunction in any way?
I pretty much never drop anything on accident on the floor, but some people probably do so on occasion. Have there been any known cases of things such as cell phones or digital cameras "breaking" after being dropped on the floor?
Are these devices protected against such possible mishaps?
You're talking about durability. Any good product should be reasonably durable; after all, people would be pretty píssed about spending money on a fragile device. But everyone's concept of durability differs. Ruggedness is not a built-in concept for most products. For those that are, you pay a premium price for it.
The rule of thumb is to treat it like a person. People don't like getting knocked around, banged up, or generally abused. They're not fragile, but same as electronics, they may and often do take such things personally.
I'm often surprised that my watch hasn't suffered from my arm swinging too wide as I go around a corner and through a door, thereby banging my watch against the doorjam. A one-time bump of your DVD player shouldn't damage it. Nor for your laptop, particularly.
Do keep in mind, though, that you're hard drive is a high-speed spinning disc, and the force of air generated by the centrifugal force of the platter is the only thing keeping the read/write heads floating above the platter at the exact, correct distance. Bang that, and it's quite possible to scar part of the platter, thereby wiping out a chunk of data and rendering an entire file useless. Perhaps even damaging the head.
