Moving from WinXP 32-bit to Win7 64-bit, RAM/Application question?
Alright, here is the rundown folks.
I'm looking at building a new system from scratch. I have been running WinXP of the 32-bit variety, but am looking to port over all my data to a new hard drive once I get Win7 64-bit installed on my new machine. My purpose for upgrading to a 64-bit system is to be able to address more RAM and access more overall functionality.
My question is, if I port over all my data, and use my applications (which will run in 32-bit mode IIRC) will those applications be able to access the extra RAM, or will it be limited to under 4GB, just as a 32-bit system would?
*Note* I do realize that I cannot directly upgrade from XP to 7 without a clean install, as well as from 32bit to 64bit.
Only programs designed for 64-bit will get an performance increase from the 64-bit OS, 32-bit programs will run just as they did in the 32-bit OS.
The ram is managed by the OS not the programs, so yes 32-bit programs will be able to use the extra memory.
