Did my laptop battery almost explode?
I'm running a 18 month old Dell Inspiron 2200 notebook with a NiMH battery. The other day I was watching a DVD with the computer plugged into a wall outlet and the battery was charging. After an hour I got an IM or something and I had to type. I put my hand on the palm rest area and the area on the right side over the battery was HOT.
As I said, I've had this computer for almost 2 years and it never got that warm before and my model wasn't involved in that big Dell battery recall.
Anyway, I pulled out the battery immediately, let it cool and inspected it. The plastic block was intact but flexible "crunchy" in the center grinding sand. My understanding is that there are several sealed reaction cells in a battery. My uneducated intuition is that a cell melted or burst, allowing the center to give.
Will the battery explode/leak/melt/burn if I try to use it again? This was a $1000 "workhorse" computer - should I buy a replacement battery or a buy a new laptop?
I'm glad I can answer this one =) : Do not purchase battery, do not spend money on a new computer yet; call Dell Tech Support, and report this overheating (too hot to touch) issue, same way how you described it here (Of course, if it has happened more than once, let them know). I can assure you that there is a solution to this problem, with no doubts. Check the link below and find the appropriate number to call, make sure you have your Express Service Code at hand (it's located on a sticker on the bottom of the system).
