Has anyone experienced DVD rot?
I have a STTNG box set that I sometimes go back and watch. I've noticed an occasional speck of white appearing on the screen. Upon freezing the image I can see the pixel for that spot appears to be missing. I can't swear by it but I don't remember seeing these white spots before. I've had other DVDs that played fine the first few times I watched them, but then began to pixelate and skip on further playback. I keep my DVDs in notebooks with plastic sleeves. Anybody got any feedback on this issue? Could it be DVD rot, a problem with the player (which is about five years old) or maybe something from the notebook plastic sleeves? I take very good care of my DVDs and they're in excellent shape, so it's not a dirt or scratching issue.
DVDs are essentially plastic, so there is no organic material to decay or rot. It's also not subject to corrosion or oxidation. Oh, I suppose over 100 years, it would deteriorate to some degree where it was no longer in pristine condition, but no more so (less, really) than vinyl records.
Home made DVDs, copies made on recordable media, do tend to suffer some degradation due to the very nature of its original recordability. Pixelation such as you describe is not uncommon. For commercial DVDs, though, it's fairly unheard of.
Two items that could be causing your problem. No matter how well you take care of them, some obstruction can occur on the reflective playing surface. Simply use a soft cloth and 91% isopropyl alcohol ($1.50/pint at any drug store) to clean any cloudiness from the surface. The alcohol does not degrade the DVD material, and it evaporates cleanly so that streaks and residue does not remain. The other item is that there is always dust in the air, and some dust specks can settle around the laser pickup lens. As it floats around the lens, it can cause obstruction of the databits at inopportune times, so a cheap lens cleaner disc is a good idea and may be needed once or twice a year.
If you can freeze the image and see a missing pixel, and it's always in the same spot, that does sound like it's on the disc, itself. Since you take precautions to protect the discs from, say, direct sunlight and from scratches, etc, there is no reason for degradation of the data surface to occur. The only thing I can think of is your method of storage. Warping of the discs can cause some issues, however slight, and with microscopic data bits, very little warping is still noticeable on playback. Discs should be stored upright, never flat, never with pressure on them, not even when stored upright, say with the pages pressed too firmly together.
A pixel spot is pretty small, so if it's just one pixel, not several, I really would not be concerned.
