Do I really need a new motherboard?
Recently, I have discovered that my dc jack on my laptop (Acer Aspire 5735-4774) is a bit wobbly. It's so loose, that I can only get my laptop to charge if the cord is at a specific angle.
I called microcenter, and they told me that I would need to replace the entire motherboard. And for my computer it will cost more than half of what it my computer is worth.
Can't I just replace the dc jack itself, without replacing the whole motherboard?
I'm not sure, have you still got the guarentee? I'd suggest you take it to an electronics department who may be able to re-solder the dc jack or maybe even try re-soldering it yourself if you feel confident. You could install a hardware identification utility that would give you the make and model of your motherboard so that you can search the internet for it at a cheeper price. For identifying hardware I use Belark Advisor found at http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html although other utilities may work better.

Take your laptop to the electronics store and have them build you an adapter so that you can use the docking station as the power input. I can't imagine them charging you more than £10-£20 for doing something that'll only take them 5-10 mins.
Just search for the words 'Power jack Repair' in Youtube or MetaCafe and you'll find lots of really good tutorials that should be able to help...
